A bowline knot forms a fixed loop at one end of a line; the loop may pass around or through an object during the tying of the knot. It's relatively easy to tie and more importantly easier to untie. The bowline is sometimes referred to as the King of Knots, and is one of the four critical maritime knots (the other three are the clove hitch, figure eight, and reef knot).
